“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” This phrase is the opening line of Charles Dickens’ novel, A Tale of Two Cities. While I don’t normally quote classical literature, this is a time when it seems fitting.
Our students are having a great year at New Legacy. All of our high school students are taking advantage of Real World Learning (RWL) experiences. We have students finishing college classes, earning their Child Development Associate certifications, completing OSHA certifications, working in internships, and completing their Doula certifications. Our Early Learning Center is preparing our children for preschool and kindergarten with great scores on our Teaching Strategies Gold assessment. There are so many great things going on…the best of times!
Simultaneously, it is the worst of times. Between the state budget crisis and the freeze of CCCAP (Colorado Child Care Assistance Program) funds, New Legacy is in greater need of support than ever before. For example, CCCAP accounts for over 30% of the ELC budget, and because of the freeze, those funds will be completely gone within two years. How can we have an amazing high school for our teen parents without the amazing ELC for their children? We have been working with the Teen Parent Collaborative (TPC) on bringing awareness to this issue. Linked here is a story from Rocky Mountain PBS about the CCCAP freeze, and here is a TPC fact sheet to help spread our message. Please read them and share them on social media to help us get through these times.
To learn more about the best of times and help us in the worst of times, please consider joining us for our Legacy Fundraising Breakfast. You will hear first-hand from our amazing students about their RWL experiences and have an opportunity to support our school. The event will be at New Legacy on May 8th at 8 am. More information about this inspirational event is below.
